Virginia Stroud is one of the most popular and richest Painter who was born on March 13, 1951 in Madera, California, United States. The year was 1970 and Stroud was the youngest Native artist to be awarded first prize in the Woodlands section in the Philbrook museum’s juried annual art exhibit. In 1982 The Indian Arts and Crafts Association named Stroud The Artist of the Year. It was also the year that The Five Civilized Tribes Museum declared Stroud as a Master Artist in the year 1986. She was awarded the Master Artist Award in 2000. received her Cherokee Medal of Honor.

The year was 1969 and Stroud was crowned Miss Cherokee Tribal Princess. She then went on to win the title of Miss National Congress of American Indians in the year 1970. Then, In 1971, she won the title of Miss Indian America XVII. In the year Stroud was competing for crowning a princess the year 1969, Cherokee women wanted her to represent their tribe in an “traditional” Cherokee outfit, which was a problem since Cherokee women wore modern mainstream styles for at least two centuries and wore minimal clothing prior to this. A group comprised of Cherokee women selected to by the Chief W. W. Keeler created a dress that was based on an old Cherokee dress worn by the Cherokee Lady, Wynona Day, and from the surrounding Southeast tribes’ official dress which they renamed”the “Tear Dress.”

She completed her studies at Muskogee High School in 1968. From 1968 until 1970, she was a student at Bacone College and studied art under Cheyenne painter Dick West, who made her his assistant in the studio. She later went to her final year at the University of Oklahoma.
